Weathered Waste
This project researched ways to up-value scrap from the steel making industry. Scale is a flaky, black byproduct of the hot rolled steel making process. Adding small amounts of the substance into a bright white concrete mix produced very little initial visual difference. However, the tile was designed to collect water in a series of pools. Over time, the weathering of the surface causes the release of scale into the pools, and subsequently an intentional staining of the surface. The coloration becomes a documentation of the architecture's past.
